EA SPORTS FC 27 launched worldwide on 25 September 2026, fronted by Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham on the Ultimate Plus Edition cover. Buyers of the Ultimate and Ultimate Plus editions have been playing since 18 September, a full week ahead of everyone else, and Season 1 of Football Ultimate Team — "Ones to Watch" — is already live and runs until 22 October.
The game is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC through the EA app, Steam and the Epic Games Store, and on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
The Grounds — football away from the stadium
The headline addition is The Grounds, a social hub built around three districts, each inspired by a different football culture. Players can drop into casual kickabouts, play 1v1, run Clubs sessions and customise how they look on and off the pitch. It is only on the current-generation versions — PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Switch 2 — which is worth remembering when a customer asks why their PS4 copy looks different.
Early reviews note that The Grounds depends on a large online player base, and that on Switch 2 that base is still thin. On the more established platforms it is already busy.
What else is new
Career Mode has a rebuilt transfer market in which clubs bid actively for players, with performance and buy-back clauses in negotiations. Player ratings now move with form, morale and fitness, and managers can build custom scenarios through a web portal.
Football Ultimate Team gains a gallery for curating collections, holographic card variants, a Hall of FUT set of player items, simpler Squad Building Challenges and single-player live events.
On the pitch, EA highlights dynamic corners, sharper attacking awareness and a defending model tuned for competitive play. The licence count stands at more than 21,000 players across 800-plus clubs and national teams, 140 stadiums and 35-plus leagues.
FC 27 Lite — a free way in
Alongside the full game EA released FC 27 Lite, a free download with Kick-Off, Learn to Play, Online Friendlies and Online Seasons. EA Play members also get a ten-hour trial that carries progress into the full game, plus 10% off digital purchases. Expect Lite to bring in players who then upgrade, and expect the upgrade to be a digital sale.
The first week: critics warm, players split
Critics have been broadly positive, with an average of 80 across 36 reviews on OpenCritic and 78% recommending it, ahead of last year's 77 on Metacritic for FC 26. The player picture is more mixed. On Steam the game sits at "Mixed" with around 54% positive reviews in its first days, and the complaints across all platforms centre on the current gameplay meta — quick turns, pace down the wings and through balls — rather than on missing content. EA has a track record of tuning that through the first title updates of a season, and the first patch will be worth watching.
What this means for the market
FC is the biggest annual release in the European calendar and this year is no exception. Three things matter for retailers and distributors:
- Demand is front-loaded and digital. Early access rewarded the premium editions, so a large share of launch revenue landed before the physical date. Keep code stock for the Standard and Ultimate editions ready, and expect FC Points to move all season.
- Two generations, two products. The Grounds is current-gen only, so the PS4 and Xbox One editions are meaningfully different games. Make that clear at the point of sale.
- Lite is a funnel, not a competitor. A free entry point widens the audience for the paid editions and for in-game currency. It is good news for anyone selling either.
